No Plain Jane

Doris Day as Calamity Jane

One of America’s darlings left the world a much better place for our family pets. Thanks to her deep love for pet animals everywhere, Doris Day made a lasting impact. Even the full proceeds of her estate will be donated to the foundation she established:   Animal Foundation

Take a glance at the history of her historic pet-friendly hotel here:

An Inn For Furry Friends

In 1989, Clint Eastwood said to her, “You were the girl every man wanted to marry, and the woman every girl wished she could be.”

My 3 Biggest “Loves” for Doris Day:

#1 When Hollywood repeatedly cast her in morally compromising roles, Doris graciously portrayed each one as a lady with class and style.

#2 After his death, she learned her third husband had squandered a lifetime’s fortune and left massive debt. Doris courageously began working soon after on The Doris Day Show, bringing joy each week to millions.

#3 Her voice conveyed emotions well beyond the lyrics of songs she sang. When I listen now to Doris’s musical recordings, I get the feeling she’s singing just for me. That’s greatness.

Soap on a Rope

Each decade brings new gift fads. Most come and go, never to return.

One such gift that’s still available today – guaranteed to bring a smile – is soap on a rope!  I once thought the rope was meant to hang the soap in the shower between uses. Turns out, the rope was designed to be looped over the wrist or neck to prevent the soap from falling during use. Surprisingly, one merchant company still sells dozens of styles online for all ages and interests.

 Novelty Soap

A few unusual soaps I recall from years past include fuzzy wuzzy soap (which grew fur after use), molded animal bars with tiny plastic toys in the center, rose and daisy flower blooms, and swirled Avon Easter egg bars.

September’s Song

We often tend to feel a touch of nostalgia as seasons change from summer to fall. Some folks would even say it’s the most emotionally-charged time on the calendar, aside from Thanksgiving / Christmas / New Year’s.

September is ending this week, so it’s time to recognize a piece of our modern musical heritage of the same title as the month itself. You may be mutually fascinated by the details surrounding the creation of this hit.

Television, commercials, movies, sporting events, video games, and even political conventions (of both major parties) have spotlighted this memorable song! And, how fitting for co-songwriter Allee Willis to be honored while she was still with us. Music video links are found here:

Honey of a Song

How many songs would you guess include the word honey in the title?

No one knows for sure, yet this list captures most of them. Please take notice: many listed here are not family-friendly, so do tread carefully.

Lots of good ones are in the mix, most of which you’ll easily recognize.

100 Songs About Honey

I’m featuring a song from the hit charts of its day, although not widely remembered today. There’s awkward monologue inserted, a misfortune of several 1950s and 60s tunes.

Sentimental country-western fans always appreciate hearing the speaking voice of great music legends, regardless. Especially when that soul is no longer walking the earth, and we can’t hear them talk in real-time any longer. What’s more, the crying chorus glosses over any lyrical lack of substance.

Let’s sit back now and bask in the blend of lilting notes and addictive emotion. Glen may convince us why Honey fits this song title perfectly.

This Little Light of Mine

Sister Rosetta Tharpe. I found her while browsing through gospel artists’ archives. She sang one of my favorite songs from childhood, and not at all the way I learned it.

The sound of her Gibson SG electric guitar reflected the power in her heart and soul; she was playing her own heartstrings. Never has anyone, dressed in satin and heels – or otherwise – given so much as she.

Don’t try to watch Sister Rosetta sitting still. You’ll be up on your feet, singing and dancing, before the second stanza ends.

The Dinosaur Days of Dial-Up

The World Wide Web descended upon the 1990s workplace with a life of its own. Soon, dial-up was no longer the only kid on the block when faster T1 lines became more accessible.

Everyone in the workplace had to learn to navigate these unchartered waters. Standard office communications now required new creative problem-solving, keeping everyone on their toes.

Long before The Office aired its first episode, real employees (not actors) worked in offices performing tasks identical to these:

Both amateur and savvy web builders created works that were later saved from extinction due to two rare persons you can meet in the following video. They’ve preserved a mass of irreplaceable internet culture history. (Notice: Non-Techies and Non-Geeks are still welcome here!)

How Does Your Garden Grow?

If you’ve ever worked in a seasonal garden, you know how fulfilling it is to harvest and eat the wonderful food grown.

In the 1940s, families needed to work their gardens with renewed focus and efficiency. They did that job quite well; to the tune of billions of pounds of fresh food grown domestically during those years.

My jaw dropped when I watched the following film and realized the two-fold harvest from the family garden was huge for the plot size. And it succeeded without a tractor or motorized tool of any kind.

See what happened when every household member worked toward a shared goal several months of the year, less than 80 years ago today:

Movie Stars and the Milky Way

One of the fastest ways to put a group of people at ease is to bring up the subject of drive-in movie theatres. Folks nearly jump from their seats when they start sharing these highly personal stories of pleasurable times with family and friends. Don’t be surprised if you see misty eyes across the room when the nostalgia really hits home.

US Drive-In Directory by State

This theatre in North Georgia is touted for its great burgers, too. How I’d love a week-long bus tour to visit a handful of these fun finds!
