Take the Fast Train to Fun in France

1986 was the year to ride the TGV, the fastest computerized train rail in Europe, to France. The video below is part 2 of 2 hosted by a fuzzy, funny tour guide. Fuzzy from the film quality and funny as she jokes about bicycling along the hilly countryside terrain. I’d hoped to improve the quality, to save your eyes from strain, but that’s not in the cards. Like watching black and white television, once the storyline starts, the content hails all else.

Those space bubble cable cars are the bomb. Then more tour guide talk. Soon, timeless landscapes appear, winding toward the ultimate destination, Hotel du Grand Paris. SIGH. I couldn’t find that specific hotel online. A similar one 30 miles away has captured my heart: Hotel du Grand Paradis in Cogne, Italy.

The First Lady of Yoga, Lilias Folan

Lilias became widely known through a PBS series bearing the name of her first book. The program was later renamed, Lilias. Without finding exact data, I would venture to bet this book will endure as strongly throughout the decades for health and fitness as The Joy of Cooking has done for classic cooking. Lilias Folan still practices her passion for yoga and has introduced millions to its poses and techniques. Maybe you have heard of her 😊.

A lesser-known yogini on PBS during the same era was Kathleen Hitchcock. The following video contains elements of her occasionally quirky personality. If you feel slightly hypnotized during the seriously “trippy” introductory music and graphics, hold tight until it repeats in the closing.

Kathleen’s followers surely miss those engaging smiles, calm voice, and unexpected humor dotted throughout her instructional episodes. I have seen pleas in multiple online forums where a fan attempts to locate the complete PBS series set for purchase.  What a world this would be if more good-hearted souls were remembered and treasured as Kathleen.

An Immortal Suede Coat

Photo by Terje Sollie from Pexels

Let’s bring together a terrific trio: trend-setting fashion, cool cars, and an action movie. The result is Michael Caine in The Italian Job (1969) wearing a double-breasted, tan suede “reefer” jacket. See film shots with captivating details of the entire ensemble at BAMF Style:

Michael Caine in The Italian Job

The Royal Automobile Club sponsored a 50th Anniversary Event in honor of the film. I can never tire of the undeniable twinkle in his eye as Matthew Field narrates.

The article and video combined are fodder for a multi-layered retro buzz.
